About the position The Division of Family and Child Health, Office of School Health (OSH) Vision Program provides mandated vision screening services to Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade students throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The Vision Program is partnered with Warby Parker, a manufacturer and retailer of prescription eyeglasses. Warby Parker provides free eyeglass to students who fails the vision screenings. Reporting to the Team Leader, the Public Health Adviser will travel throughout the 5 boroughs of New York City to conduct vision screening on students assigned to Public, Non-Public and Charter Schools. Responsibilities • Travel to Elementary Schools to conduct vision screening for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade students. • Assist in setting up and breaking down vision screening equipment for vision screenings. • Maintain and transport equipment to and from schools. • Perform vision screening using autorefraction (Spot device) on Pre-K students. • Assist students in selecting proper eyeglass frames. • Record, tally, and enter screening data accurately into the Office of School Health's Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) database. • Prepare referral packets for families of students who fail screening. • Attain updated contact information from schools for students who fail vision screening. • Assist optometrists during scheduled sessions. • Communicate with students and staff in a courteous manner and assist the Screening Team Leader as directed. • Coordinate and support eyeglass delivery to schools. Requirements • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by twelve semester credits in health education or in health, social or biological sciences. • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, and six months of full-time satisfactory experience in a health promotion or disease intervention/prevention program. • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of full-time satisfactory experience in a health promotion or disease intervention/prevention program. • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above. Nice-to-haves • Experience as a Public Health Adviser (School Health), Assignment Level I. • Experience in conducting field investigations, assessing health risks, making referrals, or collecting and analyzing epidemiological data.
