Our client, a global K-12 publisher that focuses on English language teaching and learning connects students and teachers, offering them a collaborative, mobile learning environment in the classroom or digitally from home. They are looking for a Social Studies Production Editor to join their team who will edit rounds of student books, teacher guides and assessments. This Production Editor/Proofreader will focus on a 5-level elementary (grades 1-5) social studies program that teaches geography, history, civics, and economics, from a global perspective and a MENA (Middle East North Africa) perspective. The role will include assisting in the production editorial process by copyediting, proofreading, and checking for quality of text, illustrations, and photos at all stages from manuscript to printed books and digital assessments. The Production Editor/Proofreader will follow the Content Editor at each stage to maintain readability levels, consistent voice, and house style. The Production Editor reports to the Senior Production Editor. This role is offered as a part-time 6-month freelance contract. Major Tasks/Responsibilities • Copyedit, proofread all copy following content editor review through page stages. • Maintain consistent voice and readability levels appropriate to grade level. • Maintain consistent style within each unit and book. • Check recurring items for consistency (vocab terms, folios, numbered items, titles, bookmaps, etc.) Project Description • My client is developing a 5-level elementary Social Studies program that teaches geography, history, civics, and economics from both a global perspective and a MENA (Middle East North Africa) perspective • Components per grade include: 2 consumable Student Book volumes, 2 Teacher Guide volumes, and online digital assessments • Content strictly aligns with the Social Studies Framework and the 10 Themes of the NCSS • Content adheres to a strict House Style Guide and MENA Cultural Sensitivities Guide. • A vendor is on board to write manuscript and research art. Specific Tasks Needed • Assist with Art Spec Process: • Review art specs, check new art as it comes in and edit for consistency, style, sensitivities, grammar. Track and log art and check that it is final in pages. • Review poured pages for Social Studies Student Books: • Copyedit and proofread for consistency, style, sensitivities, and grammar. • All design templates are followed; fonts, font sizes, design elements, colors, are correct. • Check bookmaps, page numbers, titles • Review art, new and pickup, to finalize for print • Review poured pages for Social Studies Teacher Guides: • Copyedit and proofread for consistency, style, sensitivities, and grammar. • All design templates are followed; fonts, font sizes, design elements, colors, annos are correct. • Check bookmaps, page numbers, titles • Assist with final print PDF approvals: • Compare final, approved pages to finalized hi-res PDFs. • Check all text line endings, image resolution, page numbers, ISBNs • Compare to bookmap. • Approve for print run. • Review Assessment items in Learnosity: • Copyedit and proofread for consistency, style, sensitivities, and grammar. • Assist with tagging and other Learnosity functions as needed. Requirements Required Skills/Knowledge • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills, including experience with electronic editing. • Strong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. • Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style. • Meticulous attention to detail. • Ability to meet deadlines will maintaining high standards of quality. • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft and Adobe products.
